"There's never been a better time to do creative work...

...THAN RIGHT NOW. You can get stuff started. You can get it out to people. And you can turn it in to a business if it's decent. And there are more ways to get work to material. And it's easier to get work. WE ARE AT A PEAK. Everything about our country is going to hell. Our politics, industry— this is the one part of America which is actually going GREAT."

—Ira Glass, Host and Executive Producer of This American Life, speaking at WFMU'st Radiovision Festival, October 29, 2011

Oregon Maritime Museum benefits from IM students' efforts

Oregon Maritime Museum

Over a dozen Integrated Media students from the video, graphic design and photography options spent the last nine months working on a variety of projects to enhance Portland's floating museum which is moored to the sea wall in downtown Portland. Directed by instructor Jon Larson, photo students restored historic photographs from the museum's archives and graphic design students created new signs, graphics, exhibit labels and improved the Oregon Maritime Museum's floorplan and layout. Video students recorded interviews and created new pieces for the touch screen kiosks on board. This work was all completed through the IM291: Integrated Media Practicum class where hands-on work for real clients allows students to practice using their skills on real projects.

Collaboration results in successful Sandy River Showdown

Graphic Design student Dustin Fletcher led a dozen fellow IM students to organize, promote and document the Sandy River Showdown, a two day multi-sport event designed by and for athletes. It was billed as an "everyman's" race where athletes of all abilities have an opportunity to participate and share in the joy of competition.

The event consisted of two races occurring over the final weekend of April. The Dam Derby (kayaking) and the Dodge & Burn, biathlon-style team relay. Beneficiaries were Team River Runner and We Love Clean Rivers. A variety of social media efforts were employed including Facebook, Flkr, Vimeo and WordPress to promote the event, sponsored by GoPro, Keen, ClifBar, Jackson Kayak, NRP, Dave's Killer Bread and RoadID.

Integrated Media Changes to simplified Application Process

Beginning Fall term 2011, Integrated Media became a "limited entry" career technical program of study leading towards an Associate of Applied Science degree with options in Broadcasting, Graphic Design, Photography and Video.

This streamlined application process means that applicants will know if they've been accepted just a few weeks after their application is complete. Fall term will be devoted to introducing students to the many career opportunities in the creative services, learning basic software skills in the major applications and finding out if the creativity, dedication and team work necessary to succeed in this competitive industry is in place.

Chris Maier, one of the co-directors of the IM program explains the change. "We are looking for students who can demonstrate the ability to succeed in all core areas. To be competitive in the creative services field, you'll need to have commitment, talent, solid digital skills and the willingness to collaborate with others. The first term classes are designed to show us your abilities in each of these areas. Two years is a very compressed time period to prepare students for an entry-level position. Our curriculum is rigorous and fast-paced so identifying qualified students at the end of the first quarter allows us to move through the material more efficiently and effectively thereafter."

Rousing success for End of year events!

4.23.09: Graphic Design students competed to win a private concert session today during this one hour timed event hosted by both Scion and 94/7 KNRK. They painted a Scion xB car wrapped in white plastic, following the radio station's theme of "It's Different Here". Fourteen GD students worked in 4 teams, each focused on one side of the car. They spent the morning sketching ideas and planning. Integrated Media Video and Digital Photo students documented the event. On Monday, the cars will be judged according to three factors: teamwork, use of the "It's Different Here" theme and creativity.

If you missed the competition, you can still see MHCC's car which will be parked at the Gresham Scion dealership for the next month. See DP student Sheryll Byrne's web gallery for shots of the whole event. View the finished car as well as a short video from the event. Update: MHCC placed a VERY CLOSE second and each student will receive a really cool prize pack from KNRK.

Digital Photo students collaborate with Graphic Designers

Steven Lenhart photo of GD students3.1.09: We asked IM Practicum students, under the leadership of faculty member Jon Larson, to take photos of our students in action. This is one of many taken that afternoon, and shows Steven Lenhart (at bottom, on desk) doing what needs to be done to get the shot of second-year GD students Sara Graebe and Jared Myrha reviewing colors for an upcoming project. (below).

Many second year projects are approached using small teams, preparing students to work in the creative services industry. In the real world, most complex projects involve a wide range of talents: art director, designer, copy writer, photographer, producer and account manager. It's increasingly common for these to be virtual teams that incorporate participants in many locations across the country and even around the world. In the IM program, from the very first term, students are trained to use file management techniques, keep blogs and use FTP to share their work with faculty, students and outside clients.
