Typography students design a grid of letters using only fone typeface: Garamond, Garamond, Bergamo, Caslon, Baskerville, Bodoni, Lubalin or Clarendon.
Create a harmonious, balanced composition by selectively placing each letter/square unit in a composition that works with the surrounding units. Design letter/square figure:ground compositions that use a ratio of 50% white to 50% black. Working within 1.5 inch square fields, use a black letter on a white field, or a white letter on a black field. Use half of the space within each square for the letter, and half for the background (50:50). In Adobe Illustrator, use the Scale, Rotate, Reflect tools as well as the Pathfinder palette.
See how the students used what they learned in this project to create their own personal logotypes.
